Modular and Prefabricated Data Center Hardware: Containerized Compute Enclosures
A prefabricated data center is built in a factory, trucked to site, and switched on. Its cabinet hardware has to do something a raised-floor hall never asks of it — survive a 1,000-kilometre road trip and then live outdoors. That changes the spec sheet.
When the Data Center Ships as a Product
The fastest-growing way to deploy compute is not to build a hall — it is to order a finished one. Prefabricated and modular data centers are assembled in a factory, integrated and tested, then shipped as containerised or skid-mounted units to be craned into place and energised in weeks. Hyperscalers use them to add capacity at speed; edge and AI operators use them to put compute where the power and the users are. The market has the same logic that drove containerised battery storage: factory quality, predictable cost, fast siting.
That shared logic is why this hardware brief reads like a BESS container brief. A prefab data center module faces two stresses a traditional white-space cabinet never does — transport and outdoor exposure — on top of the access and security demands of any data center. Get the door hardware wrong and the unit arrives with racked doors and broken seals.
Stress One: It Has to Survive the Trip
Before a modular unit ever runs a workload, it is loaded, trucked, possibly shipped, and craned. That is hours of road vibration and shock loading on every door, hinge and latch inside it — with the racks fully populated. The hardware requirements mirror the seismic case:
- Positive multi-point latching so internal cabinet doors do not vibrate open in transit. Three-point rod control such as the MS840-1SUS keeps doors captured along the full edge.
- Heavy-gauge, captured-pin hinges that will not loosen or walk apart under sustained vibration — a 3 mm ball-bearing hinge like the CL275-1SUS carries dynamic transport loads, not just static door weight.
Stress Two: It Lives Outdoors
A prefab module's outer envelope — and often its service doors — sit in the weather. The hardware on those doors is doing the job of an outdoor enclosure, not an indoor rack:

For external service hatches and electrical access points, a stainless outdoor cam such as the Y710-1SUS waterproof cam lock with handle handles weather and operation in one part. For the main personnel and equipment doors, a stainless anti-theft swing handle like the MS861-1SUS combines weather sealing with security.
Stress Three: It Is One of Many, Unmanned
Modular deployments scale by repetition — an operator may run dozens of identical units across many sites, frequently lights-out and unattended. That puts a premium on two things:
Fleet access management.
Re-keying every unit individually does not scale. A master-key hierarchy — fleet key, site key, unit key — lets a regional technician carry one credential. Security on an unmanned asset.
An unattended compute module is a theft and tamper target. Anti-theft handle profiles, recessed fasteners, and padlock provision matter more here than in a guarded hall. For the largest container doors, the anti-theft MS860-1SUS rod control handle pairs full-edge sealing with a pry-resistant handle.
Edge, AI, and the Liquid-Cooled Variant
Prefab is also how high-density AI compute gets sited at the edge. Those modules add the demands covered in our liquid-cooled rack work — heavier rear-door heat exchangers needing load-rated hinges, and frequent coolant-service access. The same heavy-gauge adjustable hinges and multi-point handles apply; the door simply carries more weight and opens more often. The Prefab Hardware Rule
A modular data center is judged on how fast it goes from factory to first workload — and nothing slows that down like hardware that arrives damaged. Spec every door for three lives at once: a transport part, an outdoor part, and a fleet-managed data center part. In practice that means SUS304 multi-point latching, heavy-gauge captured-pin hinges, weatherproof cam locks on external hatches, and a master-key system across the fleet.
